Derwen’s 1st Year Celebration – Watch the video
Derwen is the only Welsh Housing Association purely dedicated to providing housing and related services for older people and we are celebrating our first year!
Staff, board members and scrutiny panel tell us why it’s great to be part of Derwen and what is in store for year two.. Watch the video below.
Year One was all about building a strong business that would support our aspirations into the future. . The huge level of commitment and energy provided by staff and the Board during this time has been invaluable. We have formed a very experienced Board of Non Executive Directors to ensure we prosper and thrive into the future. We have also recruited two new Tenant Board Members with strong backgrounds in customer service and the desire to see excellent services delivered everyday. Nothing stands still and our ambitions for year 2 mean that we need to reinforce the skills and experience of the Board to include representation from the Health and Social Care sector.
Derwen was established to create more homes for older people and be associated with environments that are sensitive to residents requirements, are uplifting and embed themselves into the community.
- We have exciting new developments on the horizon with planning approval in place for the Gaer. This will provide 39 new homes, a communal hub, roof top gardens and mini allotments to compliment the healthy and active ageing agenda we are championing.
- A second development in Cleveland Road will also be presented to planning soon. These are great achievements as the land was lying empty for some time and he local authority and local community are pleased to know that aspirational new homes for older people will shortly be developed.
We have also made great progress with our Affordable Warmth Strategy following a successful partnership with the Energy Savings Trust. Strong funding is in place to support the investment into affordable warmth from our subsidiary company Arloes.
Our residents Scrutiny Panel, have created a new programme of reviews and have already presented their first report to Board outling key areas for improvement in the void and letting process. The Scrutiny Panel have recognised the need to expand the membership of the group and will shortly be advertising for new recruits. Resident involvement is important to us to ensure we continually improve everything that we do.
Creating new partnerships with Health and Social care colleagues has been critical to start to deliver the collaborative solutions needed for our residents. We now form part of strategic and operational groups to improve communities and services and deliver new innovative solutions to transform Health & Social Care into the future.
Care & Repair recently celebrated its 15th year and Phil Arnold, the Care & Repair manager who set up the organisation, has now decided to move on to pastures new. Care & Repair have helped over 30,000 people so far, an amazing achievement. We welcome Jason Gunter as the new manager and we will continue our strong collaboration.
We are in the process of developing a ‘Health & Active Ageing’ Strategy. We are committed to creating opportunities for residents to enjoy their home and surrounding environment, have the ability and choice to socialise, remain healthy through activity and diet, maximise the social and monetary benefits of being on line and become financially resilient.
Derwen would like to say a big thank you for the support from the Seren Group in our first year which has helped Derwen to prosper. .
Now as Derwen move over to Exchange House we will benefit from being with the rest of the Seren Group and we will strengthen relationships which will in turn benefit residents. It will also mean residents will be able to come in and speak to us more easily at the reception desk.
Our Aspirations for year two and beyond
As we look ahead to build on the strong foundations created in the first year there will be a change of focus for Derwen.
We will be looking to raise our game, with a new agenda and the creation of two new senior posts. We will be employing a Property Investment Manager and a Head of Healthy & Active Ageing.
The list of exciting opportunities is long however one fundamental principle exists that will underpin everything that we do and that is embedding our Culture of Excellence. All staff have signed up to creating excellence everyday in everything that we do. This is a big challenge that will bring great rewards for our residents and staff.
We are treading new ground for housing associations in Wales focussing purely on the needs of older people. Our plan will ensure that our new homes and services play a fundamental role in enhancing each phase of a persons life. This is an exciting time for staff, Board and older people alike.
Our homes will be aspirational places to live that people are proud of.
Bring on year Two!
