Older Person Agencies come together for first Volunteering Event
Derwen recently hosted a drop in session at Newport Leisure Centre with several like-minded organisations who provide services for older people. Older people were invited to come along to the informal event, to have a cuppa and a chat about how they can get involved with volunteering.
The aim of the event was to promote the advantages of volunteering for older people and to showcase the range of volunteering opportunities available in the Newport area. Derwen is currently trying to develop a volunteering programme for our residents to help with issues like befriending and social activities.
Older people are the mainstay of a large part of the volunteering that takes place across Wales, making a huge contribution through their commitment and accumulated experience. The ‘Citizenship Survey’ states that people over the age of 65 give the second largest amount of time to regular informal volunteering of any age group.
Thirteen partner agencies across the third sector attended the event which led to some useful discussions about collaboration and partnership arrangements between organisations. The agencies present included Age Cymru, Citizens Advice, British Red Cross, Guide Dogs and Wales Homes for Veterans
One older person who attended the event said:
“Really well put together event. Awareness of opportunities here is great. More events like this would be beneficial”.
